How to Add Subtitles

  • Sign in to your YouTube account and click the menu bar in the top-left corner of the page
  • From here, select My Channel
  • Click the Video Manager icon at the top of the page
  • Next, select the Edit drop down to the right of the video you wish to amend
  • Select Subtitles & CC. You may need to choose a video language at this point, if you have not done so already
  • Select Add New Subtitles Or CC

From here you have a choice of three options to add your subtitles

Upload a File:

If you have a subtitle file or closed caption file prepared in an appropriate file format (.srt, .sbv, .sub etc), select this option to upload it.

  • Select Upload a File
  • Click Choose File
  • Navigate the the required file, select it and click Open
  • Make any required tweaks to the caption text and timings in the editor
  • Click Publish

Transcribe and Auto-Sync:

  • Select Transcribe and Auto-Sync
  • Type the subtitles in the textbox provided. If you are creating closed captions, you will need to add sound cues (such as [applause]) as well
  • Click Set Timings to sync your captions with the video

Create New Subtitles or Closed Captions:

  • Select Create New Subtitles or CC
  • Start playing you video until the first speech (or sound effect) is reached, then Pause
  • Type the required subtitles into the textbox and hit Enter
  • Repeat this process for the entire length of the video
  • Once finished, click Submit

If at any point you realise you've made a mistake, it's a simple task to edit your subtitles.
